Bosch to close module factory in eastern Germany

August, 2012: German photovoltaic manufacturer Bosch Solar Energy confirmed it will close its 30 MW thin-film module factory in Erfurt, Germany by the end of the year.

A spokesman for the company told PHOTON that Bosch sees no future for its amorphous silicon thin-film modules because they are too expensive compared to crystalline and copper-indium-selenide (CIS) modules. The company will continue to produce crystalline silicon solar cells at it headquarters in nearby Arnstadt. The Erfurt factory’s 130 employees will be offered positions within other Bosch Group business units instead of being laid off. …
